Matthew Ebden v Elias Ymer Preview
Ebden was once ranked as high as 57 in the world, but that was nine years ago, when he was playing Davis Cup for Australia. He has never won a senior ATP title, although he did finish runner-up to John Isner in Newport Beach four years ago.
More recently, he has enjoyed success in doubles’ events, and was a beaten finalist in Singapore earlier this year, along with compatriot John Patrick Smith.
His best singles’ performance came in Marseille, where he got to the semi-finals, before he had to retire from his match with Daniil Medvedev with an injury.
The Australian has had to come through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw in Los Cabos.
Elias is the elder, and the lower-ranked of the two Swedish Ymer tennis playing brothers.
And it was with brother Mikael that he won the doubles at the Swedish Open in 2017. He spends most of his time on the junior tours where he has won 11 titles and appeared in three further finals. One of those defeats was last month in the final in Lyon, where he was beaten by Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.
Last week he competed on home soil in Bastad, where he lost to Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland in the second round.
Ymer is currently the higher ranked of the pair, so he is tipped to make the second round.
Ebden v Ymer Tip
Ymer to win: 11/10 (bet365)
Mackenzie McDonald v Ernesto Escobedo Preview
Earlier this year, McDonald matched his best ever run at a Grand Slam, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. That equalled his performance at Wimbledon from 2018.
Seeded eight for this tournament, McDonald won his fifth junior title earlier this year, beating the Austrian Jurij Roidonov in the final of the Challenger event in Nur-Sultan.
Since then, he made the semi-finals of the Challenger event in Nottingham, and qualified for both the French Open and Wimbledon, losing to Christian Garin in the second round in Paris, and beaten first time out by Karen Khachanov in London.
Currently ranked 182 in the world, is an American of Mexican descent, who has appeared in nine finals on the junior tours, winning three of them, most recently in Canada two years ago.
Last month he also won a doubles tournament with partner Nicolas Barrientos in Little Rock, Arkansas.
This will be only the second time he has appeared in the main draw of a senior ATP event this year, having got to this stage after qualifying. In Miami, where he also had to qualify, he reached the second round before losing in straight sets to the Serb Dusan Lajovic.
This should be an easy opener for McDonald against a player not used to featuring in ATP main draws.
McDonald v Escobedo Tip
McDonald to win: 2/5 (bet365)

Yasutaka Uchiyama v Alexander Sarkissian Preview
Two years ago, Uchiyama reached his highest world ranking of 78, although he has since dropped out of the top 100.
A Davis Cup player for Japan, he has won one senior doubles title -his home event of the Japan Open in 2017, when he was partnered by Ben McLaughlin. And, in his junior days, he was runner-up in the doubles at the Australian Open in 2009.
He spends the majority of his time on the junior tours, where he has appeared in 24 finals, winning 13 of them, with hard courts his preferred surface.
Uchiyama recently qualified for Wimbledon for the second time in his career, but, like all his previous Grand Slam appearances, that ended in a first round defeat, the same fate that befell him in France a month earlier.
A second round appearance in Miami is his best result on the main tour in 2021.
Sarkissian is an American player of Armenia descent. He has won one title on the Challenger tour, back in 2015, when he beat compatriot Connor Smith in the final in Gimcheon, South Korea.
Once ranked as high as 198th in the world, he is now just inside the world’s top 500, and was helped in his attempts to qualify for the Los Cabos tournament by the retirement through injury of his opponent in the qualifying competition.
He has played little competitive tennis in 2021, preferring to concentrate on exhibition matches earlier in the year.
Uchiyama should have little difficulties against a man ranked more than 350 places below him in the world.
Uchiyama v Sarkissian Tip
Uchiyama to win: 8/15 (bet365)

Emilio Gomez v Nicolas Mejia Preview
Gomez is an Ecuadorean player who made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the French Open last year, where he lost to Lorenzo Sonego in the first round.
He has played for his country in the Davis Cup, and has won 12 titles on the junior circuits, and appeared in four more finals.
Two of those finals have been in 2021 – he won on home soil in Salinas in April, and lost in Little Rock to the American Jack Sock.
His CV includes a win against Alexander Bublik in the past.
This is his first time in the main draw of an ATP event this year, although, in his last tournament, he did reach the semi-finals of a Challenger clay court event in Portugal.
Fellow South American Mejia from Colombia has also appeared in Davis Cup for his country.
He has appeared in six finals on the junior tours winning three of them, with his most recent victory coming on Mexican soil in Cancun in 2019.
The world number 301, who is 21, will be making his main tour debut in Los Cabos, having come through the qualifying competition.
Gomez should win against an opponent who will be making his main tour debut.
Gomez v Mejia Tip
Gomez to win: 4/7 (bet365)
