John Isner v Evgeny Donskoy Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and coincidentally both of them came on grass in 2013. Both first round matches and Isner and Donskoy won one match apiece.

Having gotten himself a first round bye here might not have been the best idea given Isner hasn’t played since the end of last month. And on hard court surfaces, Isner’s last match had come in Miami where he went down in three sets in the fourth round.
What makes this bit of a crucial period for Isner in the lead-up to the US Open of this season is the American’s lack of tennis and ensuing form.
Isner, who was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon last month, has featured in only six tournaments all year and won just nine matches in them all. Not the kind of record you would expect from a player who was ranked ninth in the world as recently as in 2019.
Can he now start things off on a solid note and try and go the distance having also last won a title in 2019?

Donskoy Breaks Four-Match Losing Streak
Donskoy hadn’t won a single match in main draws of ATP tournaments this year and that is why when he entered his opener in this tournament against Jason Jung, he was 6/4 underdog to win this one.
As it turned out, Donskoy did not have to even stretch so much as he completed a breezy 6-1, 6-4 win over Jung in a match lasting an hour and 20 minutes.
The Russian was off to a flier by breaking Jung in his very first service game and then made it a second break in the sixth game to seal the set.
The second set was harder fought but once Donskoy had the decisive break in the ninth game there was no looking back as he first saved two break-points and then sealed the match off his second match-point.
While this win should hold in a good stead, it is tough to see how he would break through Isner’s strong serving given his recent record.

Isner’s not played in a while and the only thing left to be seen in this for us if Donskoy can pressurise him enough to push him into a tie-breaker.
