Carreno Busta Captures First ATP 500 Title

For many years the German Open in Hamburg had been a tournament for first-time success. While Pablo Carreno Busta is already an ATP tour titlist, he had never won a title at ATP 500 level.

Last Sunday that all changed in a flash. The Spaniard put together a tremendous week in the German city, in which he defeated the likes of Dusan Lajovic, Federico Delbonis, and Filip Krajinovic without dropping a set all week.

That was an emphatic response to bounce back from the disappointment of losing in the first-round of Wimbledon to Sam Querrey. He is now on the cusp of reaching the world’s top 10 for the second time, having been bumped to No. 11 in the newly updated world rankings.

In the absences of Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista Agut, the 30-year-old has been instilled as the highest-seeded Spaniard in the men’s singles draw. Moreover, he is set to make his debut appearance at the Olympic games.

With 23 victories this season, he joins a select few who have mastered 20 plus wins in the first half of 2021.

Sandgren Chosen to Represent USA

Tenny Sandgren will be a part of the USA men’s Olympics team after he was chosen by the USTA to participate in both singles and doubles competitions.

Sandgren has been in dreadful form, having won just six of his 17 matches this season. That includes five first-round exits. He was beaten quite comprehensively by 32-year-old Jason Jung in Newport in his last outing, making him easy prey on his Olympics bout.

The former University of Tennesse graduate’s record on hard courts remains uninspiring. He is 2-4 in at four tournaments, but it could be argued three of those defeats have come against top-20 opposition.

Sandgren’s doubles partner will be Austin Krajicek. The pair teamed up at Wimbledon at the start of the month but were eliminated in the first round.

Carreno Busta v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Sandgren has been woefully out of form, but he has looked slightly ultracompetitive in his losses particularly against top 20 players. Given that both players will be transitioning to hard courts, this could turn into a lengthy battle.
