Schwartzman Looking For Good Run Ahead Of Hard Court Season
The shorter 2020 season was an impressive one for Diego Schwartzman who reached a career ranking of number nine in the world and made his first ever ATP Tour Finals. He defeated Rafa Nadal for the first time in his career and made the final four at the French Open, his best Grand Slam result.
2021 did not keep up the tempo from 2020 for the Argentine. He split a 1-1 record at the ATP Cup and bowed out in the round of 32 at the Aussie Open at the hands of Aslan Karatsev, but hoped for better results heading into his favored surface, i.e. clay.
Schwartzman returned to clay looking to put up a good run of form and rekindle the form from last season. He was in for a surprise loss at the Cordoba Open, but clinched the title at Buenos Aires thereafter.
With the clay season underway, Schwartzman was hoping to start on a strong footing but was not the best of runs. Apart from a quarter-final showing at Barcelona, it was first round losses at Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and Lyon which was not the best of build-up for the Argentine for Roland Garros.
The Argentine surprised himself and all, in part aided by a favorable draw at the French Open and progressed to the quarter-finals without dropping a set, and even taking a set off Nadal in the final eight. Wimbledon saw a third round departure on a surface not best suited to the Argentine and he will be hoping to do better here heading up to the hard court season in North America.
