Carreno Busta Eases Into the Second Round
Given the sort of form that Pablo Carreno Busta is in right now, it was always going to be a huge ask for Tenny Sandgren to win his first round match in Tokyo. And as expected the sixth seed Spaniard moved into the second round a 7-5, 6-2 win.
The first set was a challenging one with both players dropping their first service games and then exchanging breaks once again midway during the set. The Spaniard took control of the latter half of the set, breaking Sandgren a third time at 5-5 and then holding serve to close out the set.
Having drawn first blood, the World No. 11 dictated his terms in the second, breaking the American twice on his way to a first win at Olympics.
Carreno Busta has had a remarkable clay season, where he won two titles, in Marbella and in Hamburg two weeks ago. He entered the tournament in Tokyo with a 23-9 record this season, accentuated by a 17-4 clay record.
He has a decent hard court record as well, with three of his six titles coming on the surface.

Cilic Survives A Scare
In the most bizarre match of Day 1 at the Olympics, Croatia’s Marin Cilic needed 11 match points to defeat Brazil’s Joao Menezes 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) in three hours and 24 minutes.
Having lost the first set tiebreak, Cilic found himself on the brink of elimination as the Brazilian served for the match at 3-5 in the second, but the World No. 36 fought his way back into the contest, winning four games on the trot and forcing the decider.
Back on level terms, Cilic then raced to a 5-0 lead and looked to be cruising into the next round, when a determined Menezes did the unthinkable.
The Brazilian saved five match points in the sixth game to avoid being bageled and then turned the match on its head, winning the next five games and saving three more match points to take a 5-6 lead. Cilic had to save a match point himself in the 12th game before taking the game into the tiebreak, where more drama awaited. The Croatian squandered two more match points before finally closing out the contest by converting his 11th match point.
The 32-year-old, who broke a three-year title drought by clinching his 19th career title in Stuttgart last month, has come to Tokyo with a solid 19-12 record in 2021.
Carreno Busta v Cilic Prediction and Tip
Cilic has dominated the matchup in the past, but they haven’t met since 2018. And going by how they fared in the first round, Carreno Busta had a confident start against a top 100 player, while Cilic was nervy against a player ranked outside the top 200. There is a very good possibility of Carreno Busta getting his first win against the Croatian in the next round.
