Opelka Coming in with Some Form
Opening his Atlanta campaign in the quarter-finals, fourth-seeded Reilly Opelka will bank on his big, booming serves against Fratangelo in the last-16 clash on Thursday.
Though not his favorite surface by any stretch, in his own words, Opelka, who currently lies at 36th in singles, had a phenomenal season on clay this year, reaching the semifinal in Rome and the third round at Roland-Garros.
The 23-year-old American took down veteran French Richard Gasquet, rising Italian Lorenzo Musetti, Russian Aslan Karatsev and accomplished Argentine clay-courter Federico Delbonis on the road t0 the last-four at the Italian Open.
Taking his momentum from Rome into Roland-Garros, Opelka downed Slovakian Andrej Martin and Jaume Munar of Spain to reach the third round before going down in straight sets to current World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev.
Back on his preferred hard court now, a surface which suits his big-serving style, Opelka would fancy going deep in Atlanta and lift his third career singles title.
One of the home favorites at the US Open, the 6’11” star is keen find his range on concrete before turning out at the Flushing Meadows.

Fratangelo Overcomes Seppi in Opener
Sealing passage to the main draw in Atlanta on the back of two qualifying wins over Elias Ymer of Sweden and Jason Jung of Chinese Taipei, Fratangelo faced a challenging first-round opponent in seasoned Italian Andreas Seppi.
However, the 28-year-old, ranked 190 in singles currently, brought his A-game to the park against the Italian to come through in straight sets.
Having scored a surprise win in the opening set, Fratangelo faced a wave of attacks from Seppi as the Italian came out all guns blazing in the second.
The second set eventually veered to a tiebreak, which saw the American surviving some anxious moments and eventually putting it past the Italian. The final score-line read 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in Fratangelo’s favor.
Despite a run of humble returns at Challenger events, the American, on the back of an upset win over Seppi, will be no pushover for against Opelka and could, in fact, be in the mood for another big scalp.
Opelka v Fratangelo Prediction and Tip
Though the odds are stacked heavily against him, expect the unheralded Fratangelo to give a tough fight to Opelka. However, sheer experience and ranking superiority would put the big-serve ahead in the contest.
