Martinez Showing No Signs Of Discomfort

Pedro Martinez followed up his career-best win by reaching his first ATP tour semifinal on Thursday afternoon. The 24-year-old Spaniard played his shortest match of the week – lasting 90 minutes – to earn his berth in the final four at the Generali Open.

After defeating countryman Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16, in a match that took over three hours, Martinez dispelled fears he could have little gas in the tank. Instead, he went about his business with aplomb by dominating Jozef Kovalik in two sets.

The World No. 97 won 76% first serve points, and only dropped serve once in the entire match. He was prompt in converting his chances, breaking the qualifier six times from 11 opportunities. He also won 50% of return points from both first and second serves, clearly illustrating his aggressive backcourt game.

Can he seal his dream week by reaching his maiden tour-level final on Friday?

Altmaier Beats Mager In Umag Rematch

In a rematch from Umag, Daniel Altmaier claimed the bragging rights over Italy’s Gianluca Mager and once more in three sets. It was his 13th match win on tour this season  –  the most he has ever garnered in a single season and there is still plenty to play for.

The German has chiseled his game to greater heights in recent months. With a maiden ATP Challenger title in the bag at the start of July, it seems Altmaier is never one to shy from a challenge.

Altmaier won the first set 6-1, dropping just three points behind his first serve. And he seemed to be cruising when he secured a double break in the second set to take an unassailable 4-1 lead. However, the Italian No. 74 got out of the jam and punished Altmaier’s complacency.

Mager responded by taking five of the next seven games and forced a tiebreak. Remarkably, the breaker had just one minibreak which went the Italian’s way.

The third set stayed on serve until at the very end when Altmaier broke Mager for the fifth time. And this time he made no mistake in serving for the match.

Martinez v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Martinez has beaten four top 50 players this season and starts as the slight favorite. Altmaier’s form has been surprisingly consistent, but we are backing the Spaniard to maintain his standing on clay.
