Yulia Putintseva v Donna Vekic Head to Head

It will be a sixth meeting between the two. From 2013 to 2019, Vekic was four from four against the Kazakh, but Putintseva finally got her first win against the Croatian in Brisbane last year.

The heat took its toll on Yulia Putintseva at the Olympics. The Kazakh couldn’t even finish her first round match, as she retired mid-way against Nadia Podoroska, unable to continue in scorching conditions of Tokyo.

The world No. 36 will be expecting better conditions in San Jose where she brings in solid form along with her, having captured the Budapest title two weeks ago.

It’s been an up-and-down year for the the three-time major quarterfinalist so far, but a second career title, in Budapest, would have surely given her confidence a major boost.

Can she replicate the clay form on the hard courts of San Jose? Stats would tell you she is a better clay court player, but the 26-year-old has produced some decent results on hard courts as well, with her run to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open last year topping them all.

Vekic Will Be Buoyed by Her Tokyo Performance

Donna Vekic has made a steady comeback following her knee surgery that kept her out of action for a couple of months after the Australian Open.

The Croatian went 4-3 on grass on her return from injury and then looked extremely impressive at the Olympics. A gritty Vekic edged out Caroline Garcia in a close to three-hour first-round contest and then stunned the third seed Aryna Sabalenka in another gruelling three-setter.

The 25-year-old has a pretty good record on hard courts, she was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019 and made her fourth round debut at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Vekic will have happy memories from her maiden campaign in San Jose two years ago, where she won three matches in a row to reach the semifinals before falling to Sabalenka and missing out on a spot in the final.

Putintseva v Vekic Prediction and Tip

This should be a cracking contest. While Putintseva is the seeded player, Vekic has looked solid on hard courts this year and was very impressive in Tokyo. Can’t rule out the possibility of an upset.
