Kucova Off to a Flying Start
Gdynia Open finalist Kristina Kucova continued to impress as she raced past Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay 6-1, 6-1 in the first round in Romania on Tuesday
Not broken once by the Turkish player, Kucova got two breaks in the first set and three in the second to get her campaign off to a solid start.
The 31-year-old, ranked 118th in the world reached her maiden final in Poland two weeks ago, but couldn’t win a first title falling to Maryna Zanevska in the final. Bara was the only higher-ranked player who Kucova (then ranked 150th) defeated in the Gdynia tournament.
Last year, the Slovak had won the WTA 125 in Prague, another result that highlighted her ability to deliver on clay.

Bara Marches Past Friedsam
Irina Bara didn’t have much trouble in dispatching her first round opponent either. The Romanian had 19 break point opportunities in the match and she took six of those chances, beating Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 30 minutes.
Ranked 120th in the world, the 26-year-old reached the second round for the fourth consecutive tournament, having also won her first rounds in Budapest, Gdynia, and teh WTA 125 in Belgrade, but hasn’t been able to find a way past the Round of 16.
A solid clay court player, Bara has played all of her 21 ITF finals on the surface, winning nine of those titles.
She will be looking to make her first top-level quarterfinal on Thursday. She has already featured in an ITF final and reached the semifinal of the WTA 125 in Bol earlier this year.
