She lost in the qualifying rounds in 2018 and was knocked out in the first round on her main draw debut in 2019, but a lot has changed since then for the 18-year-old, who will take the court in Montreal as one of the home favourites.
A finalist in Acapulco last year, Fernandez clinched her maiden title in Monterrey this year, defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo in the semifinals and Viktorija Golubic in a surprise final.
Since the title success, the Canadian lefty has cooled off a bit, and hasn’t been able to win two matches in a row. However, she is most dangerous on hard courts and will be looking to regain the early season form at the Canadian Open. That said her performances at Roland Garros cannot be overlooked, she made it to the third round last year and was in the second round this year.
Fernandez is coming off a bittersweet campaign in Tokyo, where she dumped out the eighth seed Dayana Yastremska to win her first match at the Olympics, but couldn’t find a way past the in-form Barbora Krejcikova.

Gutsy Dart Rebounds Twice to Qualify
She was a set down against Bernarda Pera in the first qualifying round on Saturday and a set down against Christina McHale in the second qualifying round on Sunday, but the 169th ranked Harriet Dart found a way to beat both the Americans and qualify for the main draw.
Dart defeated Pera 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and then knocked out McHale 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to qualify for her eighth WTA main draw this year.
The 2021 Wimbledon mixed doubles champion with partner Joe Salisbury, Dart will be playing her first tournament since the Championships in London. She has a 2-7 main draw record this year, and has lost her last four singles main draw matches.
Fernandez v Dart Prediction and Tip
Fernandez has produced excellent results in singles and will be the favourite to win the contest, but she will be wary of Dart’s current form, as the Briton has bounced back in the last two days to take out two players ranked much higher than her.
