Dusan Lajovic v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the 31-year-old Serb and the 22-year-old Finn.

Lajovic Has Struggled to Deliver this Season

He had a good start to the season, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career, and then beating Daniil Medvedev in the first round in Rotterdam, but the Serb fizzled out after that, surprisingly struggling for most parts on clay – the surface which has been the most productive for him throughout his career.

Lajovic has, however, found some momentum in the last three tournaments, reaching the second round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals in Hamburg and Umag, where he lifted his only career title in 2019.

This will be a second appearance for the World No. 44 in Toronto, after he lost in the first round to Nikoloz Basilashvili in 2019.

A 12-19 2021 record may not be encouraging for the Serb, but he will like to take the positives from the past three tournaments and build on that in the North American season.

Ruusuvuori Qualifies With Win Over Tiafoe

The 22-year-old Finn was impressive in the first quarter, then struggled on clay and grass, his least preferred surfaces, before making a solid return on hard courts.

Ruusuvuori reached the semifinals in Atlanta, the second round in Washington and has now qualified for the main draw in Toronto by easing past his opponents over the last two days.

The 22-year-old defeated Canada’s Steven Diez 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round on Saturday and then beat the higher-ranked Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 in the second qualifying round to make it to the main draw.

Currently ranked 69th in the world, Ruusuvuori had defeated Gael Monfils at the Australian Open and Alexander Zverev on his way to the Round of 16 in Miami. He reached a second career semifinal in Atlanta, following his run to the final four in Nur Sultan last year, but yet again failed to reach the final after falling to Brandon Nakashima.

Lajovic v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

Lajovic’s form has been concerning throughout the season and despite being the higher-ranked player he won’t be the favourite to advance. Ruusuvuori comes in with a 14-14 overall record this season and he breezed past his qualifying opponents. Expect the Finn to keep the momentum going with a win in the first round.
