Ruud, On the Verge of the Top 10 Breakthrough

22-year-old Casper Ruud started the year outside the top 25 – now, he is just two ranking spots away from his first entry into the top 10.

What has made this feat possible is his absolute consistency in 2021, which entails five singles titles on the ATP Tour. The Norwegian won the Geneva Open, Swedish Open, Swiss Open, and Austrian Open with the last three trophies coming consecutively.

And if that wasn’t impressive enough, Ruud was also the semifinalist in the Monte Carlo Masters, ATP Munich, and Madrid Masters. However, it is worth noting that he has performed with such finesse only in clay tournaments.

As for his run on hard courts, his best run came in the Australian Open where he fell in the fourth round to Andrey Rublev. Here in Toronto, the number six seed has enjoyed a bye into the second round.

Cilic Survives Ramos Vinolas

Marin Cilic, former World No. 3, had to fight Albert Ramos Vinolas in his opening match of the Rogers Cup. The game went on for three sets but the 32-year-old Croat emerged victorious with 6-2, 4-6. 6-3 to reach round two.

It is no surprise that Cilic has been struggling a fair deal with his form over the last couple of seasons. He dropped out of the top 20 and has grappled with his form woes, so much so that he went almost three years without winning a singles title, let alone a final appearance.

Following a bleak start to the 2021 season where his best runs came in ATP Singapore, Estoril, and Miami (reaching the fourth-round), Cilic had a major breakthrough in the Stuttgart Open. He won the title there, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final – his first such feat since ATP London in 2018.

A few weeks later, he also achieved a silver podium finish in the Olympics doubles with Ivan Dodig.

Ruud v Cilic  Prediction and Tip

Ruud will start this match as the favourite but Cilic, given his experience and superior pedigree on the tour, can very well turn the tide around. Following his recent results, the Croat will be confident and will look to put up a good fight.
