Roberto Bautista-Agut v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and Bautista-Agut won on both occasions in straight sets. The two matches were both earlier this year on clay, at the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters events.

They have never played each other on hard courts before.

Bautista-Agut Missed the Olympics

Bautista-Agut chose not to travel to Tokyo for the Olympics, where he would have been an automatic choice for Spain.

Instead, he stayed in Europe to play in the clay court events in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, but suffered disappointing early defeats in both tournaments, which was the more surprising as he  had reached the fourth round of Wimbledon prior to that.

The Spaniard has already made the final of two hard court events this year, losing to David Goffin in Montpellier and Nikoloz Basilashvili in Doha.

He has a good record in this event, having twice made the quarter-finals in Canada, in 2017 and 2019, the last year it was played.

The Spaniard was given a bye in the first round.

Paul Overcomes Local Wildcard

Paul, who was made to qualify for Toronto, was handed a tough draw in the first round against the local wildcard, Vasek Pospisil.

And the match lived up to the billing in what was a close encounter.

Paul began strongly, breaking the Canadian in the opening game of the match. But he could not hold on to the advantage he gained, Pospisil broke back and it went to a tie-break, which Pospisil won.

After Paul held at the start of the second set, the next three games went against serve, leaving the American a break up. He controlled the rest of the second and forced another break for good measure.

The third set went with serve until the eight game when Pospisil was broken once more. Paul served for the match, the Canadian saved three match points, but not the fourth.

Bautista-Agut v Paul Prediction and Tip

The Spaniard won their two matches earlier this year, and, although they were both on clay, he will start the favourite to continue that sequence.
