Alex De Minaur v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

The head-to-head reads 1-0 in De Minaur’s favor. The Aussie won the pair’s only meeting in Antalya earlier this year in straight sets.

De Minaur Shocked By Johnson in Washington

Alex De Minaur was widely considered a solid outright pick to reign in Washington. But the Australian World No. 17 was woefully short on fitness as he lost in the first round to Steve Johnson.

De Minaur failed to build on his one-set lead as Johnson roared back to take the next two sets. But considering that the 22-year-old was only just returning to action after recovering from COVID-19, he was bound to feel the ill effects.

With 20 match wins this season, the Aussie young gun played in his first match in over a month. He was forced to miss the Olympic Games after returning a positive coronavirus test prior to the tournament. While that scenario eventually turned into a big blow in Australia’s bid for a medal win in singles, his country managed to clutch onto a bronze medal in mixed doubles.

After an opening-round bye, the 2020 US Open quarterfinalist will mark his debut on Canadian soil when he takes on Georgia’s shotmaking machine Nikoloz Basilashvili on Wednesday.

Basilashvili Knocks Out Brooksby

Jenson Brooksby was a name being uttered on everyone’s lips in recent weeks. That was due to his positively meteoric rise – from playing regular Challenger events to the mainstream tour. Plus, Brooksby had shown his full potential with some breathtaking performances

Up until he faced Nikoloz Basilshvili at the Canadian Open, Brooksby had won three Challenger titles this season and reached his first ATP tour final in Newport last month. The 20-year-old American also peaked at a career-high ranking of World No. 97.

But Basilashvili had other ideas. His return markedly improved throughout the match. The Georgian won 18% of points behind Brooksby’s serve in the first set which the American won 6-2 in 40 minutes. But he improved to 58% (7/12) in the second set in which he took it by the unimaginable score of 6-0.

And in the deciding set, Brooksby was broken twice –  the decisive break coming in the ninth game.

De Minaur v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili is one of the finest shotmakers inside the world’s top 50 but can be erratic most of the time. While the Georgian secured a confidence-boosting win over Jenson Brooksby, we reckon De Minaur will have extra pace and depth to handle Basilashvili’s shots.
