Cori Gauff v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the 2019 US Open where Gauff defeated Potapova in a fighting three-setter.

Gauff Eases Past Sevastova in Opener

Teenage talent Gauff had never won a match against Anastasija Sevastova in the past but she changed that in a hurry in her opening round encounter here in Canada.

The 17-year-old stormed to a 6-1, 6-4 win over her Latvian opponent in a match lasting an hour and seven minutes and moved into the second round as a result.

Gauff broke Sevastova twice in the first two games she served, and could well have bagelled here but missed out on a couple of set-points on her opponent’s serve.

The second set was more hard-fought than the first but Gauff overcame a break of serve to level things out at 3-3. She then broke again in the ninth game and served it out to win the encounter.

This made it her 30th tour win of the season which sit rather nicely with only 12 defeats so far.

Potapova Stuns Shelby

It’s not been the best of seasons for Anastasia Potapova since reaching the quarterfinal at WTA Dubai in early March. In the interim period leading up to this tournament, Potapova has won only three main draw matches on the WTA tour and that meant her ranking had fallen to 100th in the world.

Needing to qualify to make it to the main draw, Potapova then faced Shelby Rogers in her opener.

And while Rogers hasn’t been in the greatest touch more recently, she was a 1/2 favourite to get past Potapova here. The Russian had other ideas.

In a match lasting an hour and 36 minutes, Potapova overcame Rogers 7-6 (6), 6-3 to set up this meeting with Gauff.

The first set saw both players carve out a break apiece before Potapova came back from a set-point down in the tie-breaker to win it. It became a lot easier in the second set after the initial exchange of four breaks of serves, before Potapova ran away with a decisive third break and the win.

Can Potapova now take the attack to a far superior opposition?

Gauff v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Gauff has far too many weapons in her arsenal to dismantle her Russian opponent in this one and in all probability in straight sets too.

Tip: Gauff to win in straight sets: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
