Siniakova Beats Former Grand Slam Champions

Siniakova has played two former Grand Slam champions in Montreal so far this week.

She breezed past Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, dropping just four games, to earn herself a meeting with Garbine Muguruza, the world number 9, who won Wimbledon in 2017, and the French Open a year later, and who was seeded five for this event.

Siniakova dropped her opening service game but then three successive breaks of her own enabled her to take the first set easily.

There was a complete reversal of fortunes in the second set as Siniakova’s form temporarily deserted her. Muguruza took full advantage and romped through the set without dropping a game.

The start of the third set was very scrappy and both dropped their serve tice. But the decisive moment came when the Spaniard was broken yet again, Siniakova did not concede another point, breaking the Spaniard yet again to love.

She began with a match against the local wildcard, Carol Zhao, the world number 291, who she beat comfortably in straight sets.

After Sorribes Tormo held her opening service game of the match, the pair swapped breaks of serve. And then, with the Russian serving to stay in the set, she dropped her serve once more and the Spaniard had the lead.

The second set went with serve until the sixth game when Sorribes Tormo forced  break point which she duly converted. The Spaniard offered Samsonova no opportunities to break back and duly closed out the match.
