Ruud won their only previous matchup in Buenos Aires last year, winning the quarterfinal in straight sets.

Ruud Extends Winning Streak

Casper Ruud seems to have brought his clay form to the hard courts of Toronto as he began his Canadian Open campaign with a win over Marin Cilic in the second round.

The sixth seed who had a first round bye needed two hours and four minutes to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and extended his unbeaten run to 12 matches. He had a 28-5 record on clay this season, winning four titles, including three on the trot before heading to Toronto for his first hard court event since Acapulco in March.

Both Ruud and Cilic had a break each in the first two sets, but it was the Norwegian who got the vital break in the decider and then served out the contest for his first win in Toronto, which improved his season record to 36-9.

The 2020 Buenos Aires champion, Ruud, won the Geneva, Bastad, Gstaad and Ktzbuhel titles this year.

Lajovic Stuns Auger-Aliassime

Dusan Lajovic stunned home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round on Wednesday to march into the third round of the competition.

The Serb needed an hour and 39 minutes to beat the ninth seed 7-5, 6-4. Lajovic didn’t face a break point in the first set and saved two of two in the second, while breaking his opponent once in each set.

The World No. 44, who had a torrid time for most parts of the season, had begun his campaign with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Finnish qualifier Emil Ruusuvuori.

Wednesday’s win improved the Serb to 14-19 this season. The 31-year-old, who tends to fare better on clay than on any other surface, has a disappointing 5-9 record on the surface this year. He has done much better on hard courts this season, and an 8-8 record is a strong indicator.

Ruud v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

It’s a matchup between two solid clay court players at a hard court event. Form definitely favours Ruud, but Lajovic, too, has found his rhythm. Expect a close contest, with Ruud edging past the Serb in three.
