Tsitsipas Pulls One Back Against Humbert

Stefanos Tsitsipas has not looked like the player that won the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 or made the Roland Garros final.

The Greek had an opening round loss at Wimbledon and an an early loss at the ATP 500 in Hamburg. Getting off to a good start overall at the Olympics, Tsitsipas ran into Ugo Humbert and after winning the first set 6-2 was outplayed by the Frenchman for a three set loss.

Returning to the North American hard courts, Tsitsipas was hoping for a good run this week that will set him up well for the US Open.

Up against Ugo Humbert again, who leads their head-to-head 2-0, Tsitsipas did well to win the opening set and was up a break in the second before the Frenchman equalized as Tsitsipas was serving for the match. An intense second set tiebreak followed where Humbert saved five match points for a 15-13 win.

Tsitsipas started the deciding set well and was able to overcome the second set disappointment soon and once he was up two breaks of serve for a 4-0 lead, it was only a matter of time before he closed the set 6-1 and booked a place in the next round with a confidence boosting win.

Khachanov Continues Good Run Of Form

After a disappointing first half of the year, Karen Khachanov had a good run at the All England Lawn Tennis Club making the final eight, winning crucial matches against the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda before falling short in the quarters against Denis Shapovalov in a tight five-setter.

The Russian continued his inspired run at the Tokyo Olympics winning tight three setters against the likes of Yoshihito Nishioka, Diego Schwartzman and Ugo Humbert increasing immensely in self-confidence in every round and setting himself well for the biggest achievement of his career thus far, i.e. an Olympics medal.

Prevailing with a strong showing in his semi-finals against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, Khachanov fell short in the final against Alexander Zverev but took home a silver medal in any case. A good run of form and performances set him up well heading into the hard court season.

The Russian has had his share of difficult opponents here in Toronto prevailing 6-4 in the decider against the in-form Briton Cameron Norrie and then winning a hard fought two-setter against compatriot Aslan Karatsev which included a 9-7 opening set tiebreak.

Tsitsipas v Khachanov  Prediction and Tip

This makes for an exciting clash given the strong form shown by Tsitsipas in the last match and Khachanov having been on a good run since Wimbledon. It is down to who seizes the initiative but Tsitsipas starts as a favorite and can be expected to prevail in three sets.
