Stefanos Tsitsipas v Casper Ruud Head to Head

Tsitsipas and Ruud – who were born four months apart – have met once at tour-level before this. It was the Norwegian who emerged victorious in their Madrid Open bout earlier this year, winning 7-6 6-4.

Tsitsipas Celebrates 23rd Birthday in Style

Amid all the doubts and the drama, Stefanos Tsitsipas found his A-game as he comfortably defeated Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16, a day in which he was celebrating his 23rd birthday.

Tsitsipas had suffered Olympics heartbreak at the hands of Ugo Humbert last month, and it was almost a case of deja vu when he was paired to face the French lefty in Toronto. The Greek overcame the disappointment of a midmatch collapse (squandering five match points in a thrilling second-set tiebreak), before prevailing in the third.

And the Greek did not lose his concentration in the 6-3 6-2 dissection of Khachanov in Thursday’s early match. Tsitsipas won a jaw-dropping 93% of first-serve points (25/27) and snuffed out both break points he faced in the match.

In contrast, Khachanov teetered just over the 60% mark in his first-serve points and was broken three times in the match. The Russian did not have the answers to Tsitsipas’ all-court game which pushed him from one to another across the baseline.

With this victory, Tsitsipas extends his winning record over Khachanov to four matches.

Ruud Picks Up 13th Straight Win

Casper Ruud’s pursuit for an unprecedented fourth straight title is still on. The Norwegian picked up his 13th straight win to advance into the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open for the first time. Ruud dismissed Felix Auger-Aliassime’s conqueror Dusan Lajovic 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 15 minutes.

Lajovic landed 80% of first serves, but only managed to win 64% of points behind that delivery. In contrast, Ruud crossed the 70% mark on both his first-serve and second-serve points won. In the opening set alone, the 22-year-old won 20 of 22 service points.

The young Norwegian also hit with depth and accuracy from the back of the court. Needless to say, his confidence has reached stratospheric levels in the past month.

Ruud improves to 37-9 for the season and he occupies the final spot (eighth) in the ATP Race to Turin. Can the man from Oslo keep his recent unbeaten streak intact when he takes on the third seed in the pick of Friday’s matches?

Tsitsipas v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas has won the most matches in 2021 with 44. But Ruud enters this contest as the ATP tour’s in-form man having won 13 completed matches on the spin. Notwithstanding the Norwegian’s excellent clay-court record, he has secured two solid wins over Marin Cilic and Dusan Lajovic on the hard courts of Toronto. Tsitsipas’ struggles have been well documented in recent weeks, and there is decent value in backing Ruud to cause an upset here.
