Aryna Sabalenka v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

Aryna Sabalenka has a narrow 2-1 advantage against her compatriot, winning matches at the 2019 US Open and the 2020 Ostrava final. Azarenka’s sandwiched victory came last year’s US Open.

Sabalenka Surges Past Marino

It took Aryna Sabalenka precisely an hour to seal a good day’s work at the office. The top-seeded Belarusian ended local hope Rebecca Marino’s giant-killing run in the Round of 16, winning 6-3 6-1.

Marino was playing in the main draw of Canada’s premier tennis event for the first time. She had sent heads spinning, with victories over the number 18 seed Madison Keys and Belgrade champion Paula Badosa. With a powerful serve and bullet-like groundstrokes, it seemed Sabalenka had met her match.

But the Belarusian was just not cut from the same cloth. She obliterated the 30-year-old wild card with accurate serving and her consistent barrage of winners. Sabalenka has now passed Ashleigh Barty in the aces count for the 2021 season after surpassing the Australian World No. 1 in the past couple of matches.

After serving 18 aces in beating Sloane Stephens, and six more in her straight-sets win over Marino, Sabalenka’s aces number stands at 265, at least 10 more than Barty who is not playing this week. The Belarusian has also improved to 37-12 for the season and targets a third title of 2021.

Azarenka Edges Sakkari In A Thriller

Victoria Azarenka rolled back the years, and it almost felt like 2012 all over again. The 32-year-old gave a full demonstration of her counterpunching skills to outlast the athletic Greek Maria Sakkari 6-4 3-6 7-6 in a match that lasted over two and half hours.

The two-time Major champion had routined Sakkari in their previous meeting in Ostrava last season, but this encounter in Montreal turned into a nailbiter.

The Greek was the aggressor for the entire match, firing 35 winners (twice the number that Azarenka hit), but her 44 unforced errors (including a handful in the final set tiebreak) culminated into her own downfall.

Momentum had swelled Sakkari’s way after taking the second set. She led 4-2 in third set after a series of breathtaking winners that painted the lines at almost every opportunity. But Azarenka did not cave in. She responded and produced one of the shots of the match to set up a breakpoint that ultimately gave her a way back into the match.

Azarenka will now look to reach a third semifinal at the Canadian Open, and her first since 2010.

Sabalenka v Azarenka Prediction and Tip

As Azarenka’s match teetered towards the third hour, Sabalenka would have breathed a huge sigh of relief. Azarenka’s durability and conditioning this season have been well documented (four walkovers), and it is tough to imagine Sabalenka passing up this opportunity.
