Bautista Agut Saves 3 MPs Against Schwartzman
Roberto Bautista Agut edged out eight seed Diego Schwartzman in a thrilling three-setter on Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Toronto.
In what was a courageous third set display, the Spaniard saved three match points to win the two-hour-and-46-minute epic 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Both players maintained great intensity throughout the contest, but in the end it was the crucial mistakes that let Schwartzman down. Bautista Agut himself needed two break points to close out the contest.
The World No. 17 broke Schwartzman six times in the match, while saving three of eight break points.
Bautista Agut, who is yet to add to his nine career titles in 2021, has had two runner-up finishes this year in Montpellier and Doha. He was also a semifinalist in Miami, but lost momentum during the clay season. He came to Toronto on the back of three successive defeats, but turned things around with a routine 6-3, 6-4 win over Tommy Paul in the second round and then showed nerves of steel in the edge-of-the-set thriller on Thursday.
