Aslan Karatsev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

22nd-ranked Karatsev and 39th-ranked Cilic have not played each at any level before this.

Karatsev Underwhelming in Recent Months

Aslan Karatsev made an explosive debut at the 2021 Australian Open when he reached the semifinals as a qualifier. But with nearly three-quarters of the season gone, the Russian has won three of his last 10 matches across all competitions.

That includes a surprise second-round defeat at the Olympics to Jeremy Chardy, who was also his nemesis at Wimbledon. Although he managed to win a silver medal in Tokyo alongside Elena Vesnina in mixed doubles, he suffered another early exit in Toronto on his return to North America.

Karatsev will be keen to cap off a fantastic season by qualifying for the season-ending finale in Turin. He is ranked 11th in the Race which counts points only earned in the current season.

The Russian sits at a career-high ranking of World No. 22, and has won 23 matches at tour level this season which is a career-best return for a man who had only played 13 matches on the senior tour in the last eight years. Regardless of how the remaining part of the season plays out, Karatsev has had a hugely successful season.

Former Champion Cilic Had Fond Memories of Cincy

The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati is undoubtedly Marin Cilic’s favorite Masters 1000 tournament. The big-hitting Croat won his first and thus far only title at this level on these parts in 2016 when he upset former World No. 1 Andy Murray.

Overall, he has won 16 matches in Cincinnati since he made his debut back in 2008 –  a handsome return for a player who is a perennial danger on hard courts.

Cilic is targeting a return to the world’s top 20 and he has taken a huge leap in 2021. Not so long ago, he was ranked 47th in the world – his lowest ranking in over 10 years. But a productive grass-court season which yielded a 19th career title in Stuttgart hauled him to inside the top 40.

A deep run this week could earn Cilic a seeding spot at the US Open, but can he find his A-game when he takes on Russia’s late-bloomer – Aslan Karatsev?

Karatsev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Things have gone relatively quiet for Aslan Karatsev in recent months, but he remains a formidable opponent in this 2021 season. We expect him to burst into life again on hard courts.
