Jelena Ostapenko v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year old Latvian, and the Slovenian, who is a year younger.

Ostapenko’s Eastbourne Win An Overdue Success

Ostapenko won the French Open in 2017, and was named WTA newcomer of the year. However, after reaching two more finals early in 2018, in Qatar and Miami, she has been trying desperately to prove that those early successes were not a flash in the pan.

The recent grass court season though offered some hopes of a return to form for the Latvian.

She won Eastbourne, her first major title, since that success in Paris four years ago, and then reached the third-round at Wimbledon, before losing to the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in a bad-tempered match.

She went to the Olympics, but suffered a surprise first-round defeat to Elena Vesnina of Russia, the world 298, and, last week in Montreal, she also lost in the first round, beaten by the Czech Katerina Siniakova.

Her record in Cincinnati is modest. The best she has managed was a second round appearance in 2016.

Lausanne Winner Zidansek

Zidansek is enjoying something of a breakthrough season and, having started 2021 ranked 87 in the world, has now broken into the top 40 for the first time.

Most of her successes have come om clay, beginning in Bogota in April, where she reached her second WTA final, before losing to the Spaniard Maria Camila Osorio-Serrano.

And then at the French Open, she produced a major surprise by reaching the semi-finals, knocking out Bianca Andreescu along the way, losing eventually to the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the world number 17.

And then, to prove that was no fluke, she won her maiden WTA title in Lausanne, where she defeated Clara Burel in the final.

The Slovenian has not played since and this will be her first match of the season on American hard courts.

Ostapenko v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

This is a match between two women, one of whom is in the form of her life, and the other who is struggling to find the performance levels that made her a Grand Slam champion.

What may just swing the match in favour of the Latvian is the fact that Zidansek has enjoyed almost all her success this year in clay, and has had little hard court preparation for this tournament.
