Following an average clay season, Auger-Aliassime blossomed on grass, but hasn’t been able to replicate that form on hard courts.
He faced a shock defeat to Australia’s Max Purcell in Tokyo, then laboured to a win over Andreas Seppi in Washington before falling to Jenson Brooksby in the second round. There were expectations from him to deliver at home in Toronto, but the 21-year-old’s struggles continued, as he went down to Dusan Lajovic in straight sets.
The World No. 16 heads for his third Cincinnati tournament with a 25-17 record this season. He was a finalist at Melbourne-2 and reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open to start the year in style.
Surprisingly he had an ordinary clay court season, a surface where he has been pretty good in the previous years. Auger-Aliassime struck back form on grass, reaching the final in Stuttgart, semifinals in Halle and his first major quarterfinal at Wimbledon.
He will be hoping to put behind his recent disappointments and get some momentum going in Cincinnati. But he faces a very tough opening round match against the Hungarian.

Fucsovics Looking to Build on Wimbledon Success
He will be playing for the first time since his remarkable journey at this year’s Wimbledon, which saw him beat Diego Schwartzman and Andrey Rublev en route his first ever major quarterfinal, which he eventually lost to Novak Djokovic.
He may be a bit short on match practice, but the 29-year-old has a solid record on hard courts and has already featured in a hard court final this year, finishing runner-up to Rublev in Rotterdam. He followed it up with runs to quarterfinals in Doha and Dubai, thanks to which he has a 13-5 record on the surface this year.
Overall he brings a 21-13 record to Cincinnati, a tournament where he has had decent runs in the previous main draw appearances. Fucsovics reached Round of 16 in 2018 and repeated the feat last year, which included a victory over Grigor Dimitrov.
