In-form Opelka Will Be a Player to Watch

Reilly Opelka comes to Cincinnati on the back of a terrific week in Canada, where he reached his maiden Masters 1000 final, thanks to which he moved nine places in the rankings to a career-high 23 this week.

The 6’11” American, who was slow off the blocks this season, knocked out Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov, Lloyd Harris, Roberto Bautsta Agut and World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the final last week, but couldn’t match the level of Daniil Medvedev, falling to the World No. 2 in straight sets.

While Opelka has been ordinary in most of the tournaments, it’s the big events that have brought the best out of the big man. He was also a semifinalist at the Rome Masters this year and made it to the third round at Roland Garros.

He heads to Cincinnati with a 15-15 record this season and will be hoping to at least match his last year’s exploits, when he made it to the quarterfinals with wins over Cameron Norrie, Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini, but was forced to retire with a knee injury in the quarterfinal against Tsitsipas.

Moutet Sees Off Popyrin to Qualify

World No. 90 Corentin Moutet entered the main draw with a tough three-set win over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Frenchman rallied from a set down to beat the Australian 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. On Saturday, the feisty left-hander had defeated Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2 in the first qualifying round.

Moutet, who comes in with an 11-11 record, has lost his last four main draw matches. He began the season by reaching the semifinals of Melbourne-2, and also made it to the quarterfinals of Estoril, but is 2-7 from his last nine matches.
