Alexander Zverev v Guido Pella Head to Head

Their only tour-level meeting was in the Munich Open final in 2017, which Zverev won in straight sets.

They also met once before at a lower level final in Heilbronn and Zverev won that as well in straight sets.

Zverev Finally Wins a Match in Cincy

Having lost all six of his previous matches in Cincinnati, there was pressure on the Olympic gold medallist, but the World No. 5 finally got the monkey off his back with a straight sets win over South Africa’s Lloyd Harris on Wednesday.

The 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win was the German’s first win in the tournament, where he has been a regular since 2015 but had failed to win a single match. The victory also extended Zverev’s winning streak to seven matches, which began in the first round in Tokyo. Zverev went all the way to win the gold at the Summer Games, by beating Karen Khachanov in the final.

Against Harris, Zverev struck 11 aces, won 86% points on the first serve and 75% of his second serve points. He didn’t face a break point in the entire match but capitalised on the two of the three breaking chances that he had in the contest.

Zverev’s win improved him to 34-11 this year, which also saw him clinch a Masters 1000 title in Madrid and an ATP 500 in Acapulco.

Pella Gets Another Solid Victory

He is ranked 93rd in the world, and had come into the tournament in dismal form, having won just three of his 16 matches this year. But fortunes have turned for the former World No. 20 in Cincinnati, where he took out the World No. 19 on Tuesday and No. 36 on Wednesday to get his first back-to-back wins of the year.

Pella, who was dominant in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over 15th seed David Goffin in the first round, continued his solid form in the second round on Wednesday as he knocked out Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-5 in an hour and 30 minutes.

Pella got two breaks as he overpowered the Italian in the first set, and then got an early break in the second, before Fognini broke back to send the set back on serve. But the Argentine got his nose in front again late in the set and then served out the match to progress into the next round.

Zverev v Pella Prediction and Tip

The German would be relieved to have ended the Cincinnati jinx, and now will be looking to extend his streak. Expect Zverev to win this in straight sets.
