Having received a wild card for the U.S. Open, Venus Williams will be playing in Chicago to prepare for the final grand slam of the year. She has been out of action for close to two months now and will be playing for the first time since her second round defeat to Ons Jabeur at Wimbledon.
The 41-year-old, currently ranked 147th in the world, has a 3-8 record this year, with her three wins coming against Arantxa Rus at the Yarra Valley Classic, Kirsten Flipkens at the Australian Open and Mihaela Buzarnescu at Wimbledon.
A seven-time Grand Slam winner, the former World No. 1, who won two U.S. Open titles in 2000 and 2001, will be making her 23rd (and 15th straight) appearance in Flushing Meadows this year. Having missed the Canadian Open for health reasons and the subsequent Cincinnati Open, Williams will be hoping to get some good match practice in Chicago.
There won’t be much expectations from her to make it deep into the tournament, but she will be looking to get into a rhythm, by competing well in the tournament.

Hsieh Hasn’t Won an Opening Round Match Since February
She was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, but ever since her straight sets defeat to Naomi Osaka in the last eight in Melbourne, the 35-year-old is 0-7 in the main draws.
Cori Gauff handed her the most recent defeat, outplaying the Chinese Taipei player 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round in Cincinnati.
The Wimbledon doubles champion, Hsieh has however found her winning touch at the lower level tournaments. She reached the quarterfinals at the WTA 125K event in Concord earlier this month and qualified for Cincinnati with solid wins over Americans Peyton Stearns and Lauren Davis.
A former top 30 player, Hsieh is currently ranked No. 86 in the world and will be hoping to get her first opening round win on the tour since February.

With Hsieh getting a few wins in August, she will be confident of ending her winless drought in the main draws. While Williams will be eager to shake off the rust and get some form ahead of the U.S. Open. Expect a good match with Hsieh advancing.
