Shuai Zhang v Bethanie Mattek-Sands Head to Head
Zhang won their only tour-level meeting in Seoul in 2016. Mattek Sands had won a qualifying round in Miami in 2013.

Zhang Makes a Brisk Start
World No. 49 Shuai Zhang stormed into the second round with a straight sets win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan.
The 32-year-old Chinese player had fallen behind in the first set with the Italian racing to a 1-4 lead following a break of serve in the fourth game. But Zhang came back strongly winning three consecutive games to draw level and them got ahead with a second break at 5-5. She would close out the set without much fuss and then run away with the second with three breaks of serves to win the one-hour-and-27-minute contest 7-5, 6-1.
Zhang, who had a terrible start to the season, going 1-9 from her first 10 matches, saw her fortunes turn in Nottingham, where she reached a fourth career final, but couldn’t add to her previous two titles falling to Johanna Konta in the final. Zhang has displayed good form since then, reaching the semifinals on clay in Palermo and the quarterfinals on hard courts in San Jose earlier this month.
The win ended Zhang’s three-match losing streak in the main draws. The series of defeats began with a last eight defeat to Ana Konjuh in San Jose. She retired from her opening round match in Montreal due to a thigh strain, despite taking the first set against Konta. In Cincinnati, Zhang came through the qualifiers but couldn’t match the level of Yulia Putintseva in the first round.

Mattek-Sands Registers Rare Win
Bethanie Mattek-Sands notched her second main draw win of the season, defeating lucky loser Ena Shibahara of Japan in a close three-set contest.
Ranked No. 363 in the world, Mattek-Sands last featured in a main draw of a WTA event in February, winning the first round of the Grampians Trophy, but falling in the next. Since then she appeared in a few qualifying rounds but couldn’t find a way through.
Over the last three months she hadn’t even participated in the qualifiers and that clearly reflected in her performance as she laboured to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win against the 615th ranked played in the world.
The 36-year-old American converted four of eight break points and saved four of six to wrap up the contest in just over two hours.
Can she make the quarterfinals? Looks highly unlikely.
Zhang v Mattek-Sands Prediction and Tip
