Second seed Anett Kontaveit staved off a comeback bid from Katerina Sinakova in the quarterfinals on Thursday to reach a third semifinal in 2021.

The Estonian has not lost a semifinal this year, reaching the finals of the Grampians Trophy and at Eastbourne, but hasn’t been able to add to her ‘s-Hertogenbosch title she won in 2017.

On Thursday, Kontaveit got the only break of the first to take a one-set lead, but saw a determined Sinikova fight back in the second to force the decider. Both players traded two breaks in the first eight games in the second set, but it was the Czech who got the decisive third break in the 12th game to wrap up the set. The third set began with three consecutive breaks with Konteveit getting two of those. She didn’t look back from their on and added another break en route a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory.

The 25-year-old, who had come into the tournament on the back of five consecutive defeats, beat Lauren Davis 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then outplayed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

Sorribes Tormo Dumps Out Zhang

Seventh seed Sara Sorribes Tormo marched into a fourth semifinal of the season with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over ninth seed Shuai Zhang in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Continuing to build on a stellar season, the World No. 43 saved all three break points that she faced against the Chinese player while breaking her twice in each set to wrap up the contest in an hour and 15 minutes.

The 24-year-old, who clinched her maiden career title in Guadalajara this year, was a semifinalist in Monterrey and Hamburg and reached the quarterfinals of two WTA 1000 tournaments in Miami and Montreal.

The Spaniard began her Cleveland campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over American Alexa Glatch in the opening round and then got a free pass into the last eight after Russia’s Vera Zvonareva withdrew before the start of the second round contest.

Kontaveit v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

With Kontaveit back in form, expect this one to be a close contest. Yes the Estonian is the second seed and has dominated the head-to-head contest, but Sorribes Tormo has closed the gap over the last two meetings. The Estonian needed three sets to win at the Australian Open last year and could win just five games in Ostrava. Expect a close contest this time around, with possibly Sorribes Tormo edging through.
