Cristian Garin v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

Garin and Gombos have no previous history at any level. Monday’s match will be their first official meeting of any kind.

Garin Without Hard-court Win in 2021

Cristian Garin’s record on clay outpaces anything he has accomplished on any other surface. But certainly not to the extent where he would be entering the 2021 US Open without a single win on hard courts this season.

The Chilean clay-court specialist is 0-4 on the surface, losing his most recent bout at the Cincinnati Masters to Tommy Paul in three sets. Prior to that, he was beaten by John Isner by a mirror scoreline; 6-4 3-6 4-6.

It is quite unthinkable that Garin would still be chasing for that elusive first win on hard courts this term, but with a reshuffled calendar, it was quite easy to see where his priorities lie. He was at his effervescent best during the Golden Swing where he captured his fifth career title on home soil.

Garin’s major highlights this season aside from that title triumph in Santiago came at the Grand Slams. He reached the Round of 16 at both the French Open and Wimbledon. And considering that he did not play this year’s Australian Open, maybe we should not discard his chances of emulating that feat in New York.

Gombos Winless In Five Matches

If the form table was a barometer in handing main draw slots, Norbert Gombos would have missed out on a place in the 128-man field at the final Grand Slam of the year.

But Gombos, the World No. 112, has done most of his good work during the first half of the season where he reached four ATP tour quarterfinals (all on clay) – the last of which came in Bastad.

That ATP 250 event in Sweden marked the last time he won a tour-level match (beating Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets). He was knocked out by Marcos Giron at the Tokyo Olympic Games, and did not scale the qualifying rounds of both Toronto and Cincinnati.

Gombos’ winless streak was extended to five matches after losing in three sets to Egor Gerasimov in Winston-Salem.

Garin v Gombos Prediction and Tip

Gombos’ preparations for the US Open have been far from ideal. He has lost in each of his last four matches on hard courts. But the good news is that Garin’s form on the surface is hardly anything special either. The Chilean should win this, but expect a tense battle.

Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
