It will be a first meeting between the two.

Putintseva Has Had a Below-Par Season

A two time French Open quarterfinalist, the World No. 33 made it to the last eight of the U.S. Open for the first time last year.

The 26-year-old Kazakh comes to this year’s tournament with a 17-19 record, but she will be happy to have picked up her second career title by winning the Budapest final last month. The competition may not have been of the highest quality at the WTA 250, but a title definitely would have boosted her confidence in an otherwise below-par season.

A solid clay-court player, Putintseva has a winning career record on the surface, but she ain’t too bad on hard courts either, and a 45% win record in close to 200 matches is a testament to that.

As far her current form is concerned, she is 3-3 in the North American swing. She was a quarterfinalist in San Jose, but made early exits from the Canadian and Cincinnati Opens, winning just one match in the latter.

Kanepi to Pull Out All the Stops

A six-time major quarterfinalist, the 36-year-old may not be the force that she used to be, but one can count her out at their own peril. Look what she did at the Gippsland Trophy earlier this year, taking out some top opponents on her way to a first final since 2013.

A four-time WTA winner from nine finals, the World No. 70 is 9-9 on the tour this season, and 16-10 including qualifiers and lower level tournaments, which includes an ITF title.

Kanepi has played just one hard court tournament in the tune-up to the final major of the year, beating Anhelina Kalinina in the first round in Chicago, but falling to Marta Kostyuk in the second.

A quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open in 2010 and 2017, Kanepi has not gone beyond the second round over the last two years. She will be making her 14th main draw appearance in the tournament, and quite interestingly she has been eliminated in the first round just twice.

Putintseva v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Putintseva will be the favourite to advance. There may be questions about her form, but she will be looking to draw inspiration from her recent wins over Donna Vekic and Ajla Tomljanovic in San Jose. Expect her to hold off the veteran.
