Reilly Opelka v Kwon Soonwoo Head to Head

Opelka and Kwon have been involved in just one head-to-head meeting till date. The pair met in the quarter-finals of the hard court event at Delray Beach, Florida last year. Opelka came through comfortably in straight sets.

Opelka Fell to Ruud in Cincinnati

Coming into the prestigious Cincinnati Masters on the back of a sensational runner-up finish at the Canadian Open, Opelka was drawn to face Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the tournament opener.

Picking up from where he left off in Toronto, the big-serving American had a fight on his hands against the diminutive but spirited Frenchman, who roared back into contention after losing the opening set, taking the match to a decider.

However, Opelka got himself a decisive break of serve in the final set and held on to his lead to prevail 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.

The win saw him set up a third-round showdown against in-form Norwegian Casper Ruud, who has had a golden run this year, picking up as many as four Tour titles.

The tall American, who reached the championship round in the Canadian capital on the back of a run of wins, including upsets of Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov, Roberto Bautista Agut and current World No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas, came up short against the Norwegian at the Masters, going down in three sets.

Though Opelka pipped Ruud to a win in the opening-set tiebreak, the Norwegian bageled the American in the second and cruised home in the third-set tiebreak to close out a scrappy win.

The American would be hoping to bounce back from his Cincinnati disappointment in his first-round clash at the Flushing Meadows against Kwon Soonwoo of South Korea.

Opelka won his only previous head-to-head match-up against the South Korean and will be eyeing an encore.

Kwon Did His Bit in Winston-Salem

Currently ranked 74th in singles, Kwon would be going into the Flushing Meadows low on confidence and belief after a run of unflattering results in recent weeks on the road.

The 23-year-old South Korean failed to reach the main draw at Cinci, falling to a straight-set loss in the opening qualifying clash against American Tommy Paul.

He fared only marginally better in his next Tour event, the Winston-Salem Open, winning his opening clash against Moldovan Radu Albot but failing to go past seasoned Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in round 3.

Kwon did put up a fight against the Spaniard, taking the match to a decider after losing the opening set. However, Busta brought his experience into play to eventually prevail in three sets.

The South Korean will have a giant stumbling block, in the form of Opelka, to roll over if he has to reach round 2 at the US Open. However, there’s no saying what trick the underdog will have up his sleeve on matchday.

Opelka v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Current form, ranking and their head-to-head record makes Opelka an overwhelming favorite in this first-round clash against Kwon. However, the South Korean will also be thirsting with the big-serving American.
