The pair have never played each other before. This will the first match between the 26-year old British player, and the Spanish teenager, who is eight years younger.

Norrie’s Breakthrough Year

Norrie has enjoyed a breakthrough year on tour, beginning in Estoril, where he reached his second ever senior ever senior singles final, before losing to Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The same month he finished runner-up in Lyon and then, switching to grass, again got to the final of Queen’s before losing to Matteo Barrettini in three sets.

However, he finally got to lift a trophy aloft, having chosen to skip the Olympics, winning the Los Cabos Open in Mexico.

Now he is looking to improve on a Grand Slam record which is modest, never having been further than the third round in any tournament, the stage he reached in New York last year.

Since winning in Los Cabos, results have been disappointing – he was beaten in the second round in Washington and the first round in both Toronto and Cincinnati.

Alcaraz Makes his US Open Debut

The teenager is making his debut in New York, but, after the meteoric season he has enjoyed, Alcaraz is unlikely to be overawed by his surroundings.

He has already made the third round at the French Open and the second round in both Melbourne and Wimbledon, and already he is tipped as a successor to Rafael Nadal, and not just both are Spanish and left-handers.

The youngest man ever to break into the top 60 in the world, he won the Challenger event in Qeiras, Portugal in March, and two months later, picked up his first senior ATP trophy in Umag, Croatia.

Although he was brought up on clay, he is starting to show he can adapt to other surfaces as well, reaching the semi-finals in Winston-Salem a few days ago, before losing to the Swede Mikael Ymer.

Norrie v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip

Norrie would have wished for an easier first-round opponent than the Spanish teenager who has already made such a big impression in 2021. However, he has the greater experience on the big stage, and should be able to use that to navigate passage to the next round.
