Muchova has been at her best in the majors this year.
She reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open, accounting for the favourite Ash Barty in the quarterfinals. She also reached the last eight at Wimbledon for the second time in her career, having reached that stage in 2019. Roland Garros was the only disappointment so far, as she won the first two rounds but couldn’t make it to the Round of 16.
Ranked No. 24th in the world, Muchova also reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time, defeating Naomi Osaka and Maria Sakkari en route to the last eight in Madrid.
So time and again, Muchova has showcased her ability to lift her game in big tournaments. An aggressive, all-court player, the 22nd seed most recently upset Bianca Andreescu in the second round in Cincinnati but withdrew from her third round contest against Belinda Bencic, while trailing the Swiss 5-7, 1-2.
Muchova has won at least two matches in all three of her previous U.S. Open appearances, winning three last year before bowing out to Victoria Azarenka in the round of 16.

Can Sorribes Tormo Step Up at the Majors?
It’s been a breakthrough season for the World No. 41, who captured her first career title, reached two WTA 1000 quarterfinals and has been one of the consistent performers on the tour.
Sorribes Tormo is coming into the tournament in great form, having reached the last eight in Cincinnati and the semifinals in Cleveland. Her record in the majors hasn’t been too encouraging as she lost in the first rounds at the Australian Open and the French Open and in the second round at Wimbledon.
The 2021 Guadalajara champion will be making her fifth appearance at the U.S. Open. Having failed to get off the blocks in the first three appearances, she finally won her first round match last year but was sent packing in the next.
