Not only is Taylor Fritz looking to post his first win in five tries against De Minaur, but he will simultaneously target a first win in four matches.
Fritz has lost four matches to Australia’s top-ranked male player, dating back to the Surbiton Challenger in 2018. And remarkably, he hasn’t managed to take a single set.
Since reaching back-to-back semifinals in Los Cabos and Atlanta, the 42nd-ranked American has suffered a massive dip in form. Defeats to Denis Kudla, James Duckworth, and most recently to Albert Ramos Vinolas have given Fritz food for thought in his preparations for the final Grand Slam of 2021.
On a personal level, this has been a very decent season for the man from San Diego. But his inconsistencies continue to hamper his progress. He is 20-16 for the season, but he is yet to account for any titles.
