Having gone into her opening round encounter as 1/3 favourite, Gauff would have been expected to do a lot better than she eventually did against Poland’s Magda Linette.
That Linette managed to push her into a third set and to more than two and a half hours is as much a testimony to her own performance as it was to Gauff’s struggles in the encounter.
Gauff got a late break to go 5-3 up in the opening set but rather stunningly lost serve on successive occasions to fall a set behind. In the second set, after going a break down she got Linette to taste her own medicine with back to back breaks and a decider was forced.
With the momentum having shifted, Gauff then broke Linette twice in the final set, dropped her own serve once and was in the danger of losing her serve again when she was a break-point down while serving for the match. She recovered quickly to clinch the encounter but the question-marks over her rhythm could well be exploited again.

Stephens Needs a Final Set Tie-Breaker
After having struggled through her recent campaigns on the WTA tour, it was probably a tad unlucky for Stephens to have drawn her close friend and fellow American player Madison Keys in her first round match.
In the end, it took her three sets to get through that opener though, overcoming Keys in a tie-breaker in the final set that went to a 9-7 scoreline.
Stephens overcame a one set deficit to clinch the encounter 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7) and make it to the second round where she will face another American.
The world number 66 blunted six aces from her opponent and played down a few double-faults of her own, was broken four times to getting just three breaks of her own but still found a way to register somewhat of a miraculous win.
Can Stephens now push Gauff to a corner by displaying that same fighting spirit?
