Riske Storms Into the Semis

She came into the tournament with a dismal 4-11 season record, but three matches on Alison Riske is on the brink of a 10th WTA final.

A two-time winner on the tour, Riske, who had not won two matches in a row this season, has suddenly won three in this tournament with her most recent victim being Kristina Mladenovic, whom the American beat 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Broken thrice by the Frenchwoman in the match, Riske converted six of nine break points to win the quarterfinal in an hour and 30 minutes.

This is the first time in two years that Riske is in the semifinals of a tournament. She reached the final in Wuhan in September 2019, but hasn’t even made the final four since then.

Riske began her Slovenian challenge with a 7-5, 6-3 win over local player Pia Lovric. She continued her winning momentum in the second round, fighting back from a set down to beat Viktoria Kuzmova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

It will be interesting to see if the World No. 38 can reach another final on Saturday.

Juvan Wins All-Slovenian Battle Against Zidansek

World No. 103 Kaja Juvan shocked compatriot and fifth seed Tamara Zidansek in an all-Slovenian quarterfinal on Friday.

After close to a two-hour contest, Juvan battled past Zidansek 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to reach her first semifinal since reaching the final four at the WTA 125 in Bol two years ago.

The 20-year-old hasn’t dropped a set this week. She began the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 opening round win over Croatia’s Petra Martic and continued her dominance in the second round with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win over Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic.

Juvan, who reached the third rounds of the Australian Open and Wimbledon for the first time this year and also won her opening round match at the U.S. Open, will be looking to make the season even better by reaching her maiden WTA final.
