Sonego Shrugs Off US Open Disappointment
Sonego won his second senior career title on the clay of Sardinia in April, where he also won the doubles title, And he showed that he is developing into an all-court player by reaching the fianl at Eastbourne, eventually losing to Alex de Minaur in three sets.
A run to the fourth round of Wimbledon then ensued, equalling his best ever showing at a Grand Slam event, but he would have expected more of himself at the US Open than he ultimately produced.
Seeded 20, he won the first set of his opening round match against the German qualifier Oscar Otte, but then promptly lost the next three.
However, he shrugged off that disappointment with a confident display against the Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics, the world number 41, in the first round here on Monday.
The Italian broke Fucsovics in the fourth game of the match and controlled matters from there to take the first set.
He then underlined his dominance by breaking in the opening game of the second set, and broke Fucsovics once more to claim an easy win.

Qualifier Rune Enjoys Dominant First Round Win
Rune has enjoyed a stellar year on the Challenger tour, appearing in six finals, and winning four of them, including two last month in Italy.
That has helped propel him up the rankings but his rise has not been without controversy – he was forced to apologise and was the subject of an ATP investigation after uttering homophobic comments during a tournament earlier this year.
The 18-year old is starting to appear more regularly in the main draws of senior tournaments as well and recently qualified for the US Open for the first time, although he subsequently lost in the first round.
The Dame entered the qualifying competition in Metz, beating first Thomas Fabbiano of Italy, and then the veteran German Philipp Kohlschreiber, both in three sets.
That earned him a first round tie with Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain, the world number 119, in a match that Rune so dominated that, had it been a boxing match, the Spaniard’s corner would have thrown in the towel to stop their man taking any more punishment.
Zapata-Miralles did not win a single game, and the whole match was over in 48 minutes.
Sonego v Rune Prediction and Tip
Rune is a potentially dangerous opponent for the number five seed, and will have been buoyed by his first round victory. But the Italian enjoyed a good opening round victory himself and has developed into an all-round court player. Hi greater experience should see him prevail.
