Gerasimov’s Disappointing Season

Gerasimov has been overshadowed this year by the exploits of Ilya Ivashka, but, at one stage last year, it looked like he might be the Belarussian tennis player about to make a breakthrough after reaching the final of the Maharashtra Open in Pune, eventually losing to Jiri Vesely.

But then came lockdown and he has not been the same player since.

All his best results in 2021 came at the start of the year, with a  third round appearance at the Melbourne warm-up event, the Murray River Open and then a trip to the semi-finals in Montpellier.

Since then though it has been a story of first and second round defeats, including the US Open where he was beaten by Hubert Hurkasz in the opening round.

He did though cause something of an upset in the first round by defeating the number six seed and world number 53, Benoît Paire in straight sets on Tuesday.

The duo exchanged breaks early in the first set and then the Frenchman went a break up, only to squander his advantage and hand the first set to Gerasimov when he was broken twice in return.

Paire looked to have regained the initiative when he broke early in the second set, but, yet again could not hold on to his lead. Gerasimov broke back and then broke again to seal the win.

Taberner Much Happier on Clay

Taberner has won two Challenger evens this year, both on his favourite surface of clay, chalking up victories in Antalya in February and Aix-en-Provence in June.

That made it 15 finals in all ion the junior tours, all on clay.

Leveraging that form he qualified for the French Open for the second time in his career. Although he then was beaten at the first round stage.

Away from clay he tends to struggle and was beaten in the first round of qualifying for the US Open, Since them he returned to clay on the Challenger tour, reaching a semi-final in Seville but then suffering an opening round defeat in Szczecin, Poland.

He was drawn against the experienced Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in the first-round here, and caused a minor upset by beating a man, more at home in these conditions in straight sets.

Gerasimov v Taberner Prediction and Tip

Gerasimov has not been in the best of form this year, but the surface gives him a big advantage over an opponent much happier on clay.
