Carreno Busta Survives Rune Test
Second seed Pablo Carreno Busta survived a scare in Metz on Friday, as he battled past 18-year-old Danish qualifier Holger Rune to reach a sixth individual semifinal this season (he was also a semifinalist with Spain at the ATP Cup).
Both players had a break each in the first two sets, but it was the Olympic bronze medalist who got two in the third, one more than his opponent, to seal the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes.
With nine aces and no double faults, Carreno Busta was slightly better than Rune on his serve. He also won 78% (42 of 54) points on the back of his first serve. The Spaniard had on Monday beaten Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 7-5, 6-2.
It’s been an emphatic season for Carreno Busta so far, who claimed two clay court titles in Marbella and Hamburg in addition to finishing third at the Olympics by winning the bronze medal match against Novak Djokovic.
The World No. 16, was was also in the semifinals in Barcelona and Mallorca this year, improved his season record to 34-13. It will be interesting to see if he can reach a third final on Saturday.

Monfils Marches on with Basilashvili Win
Third seed and World No. 20 Gael Monfils will be featuring in a tour-level semifinal for the first time since February last year.
Monfils, who last reached the final four in Dubai before the suspension of the tour due to the pandemic, has struggled with form and consistency ever since the restart of the tour last year.
But the Frenchman seems to have regained his winning touch in Metz and is now just two wins away from adding to his previous Metz title, which he won 12 years ago.
It’s been a happy hunting tournament for the 35-year-old, who will be playing in a fifth semifinal in the tournament, where he is making a sixth appearance. The only time he missed out on a semis spot in Metz was in 2004, when he lost in the quarterfinals.
On Friday, Monfils needed just 68 minutes to dispatch Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3. The Frenchman, who received a first round bye, didn’t drop a set in the second round either, defeating Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
In the quarterfinal, Monfils struck 11 aces to Basilashvili’s none. He also won 74% points on the first serve and dropped just 13 points on his serve to outplay the Georgian.
Carreno Busta v Monfils Prediction and Tip
Monfils is a Metz legend and it will take a massive effort from the second seed to fend off the revitalised Frenchman. However, the way Carreno Busta has played this season, it seems he is most likely to reach another final.
