Rublev Starts Strong
Top seed Andrey Rublev started his campaign in the San Diego Open with a bye into the second round. There, he started his campaign against the American Brandon Nakashima and defeated him comfortably with 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and three minutes.
Currently ranked World No. 5 – his best singles ranking yet – Rublev has been nothing short of brilliant this season. Even though he has won only one singles title yet, he remains a top contender to win the ATP World Tour Finals later this season. Since winning the Rotterdam Open in March, the 23-year-old Russian has reached the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Halle Open, and Cincinnati Masters.
In these tournaments, Rublev has overcome some big giants like Marin Cilic, Gael Monfils, Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, among others.
It is also worth mentioning that between the finals in Rotterdam and Monte Carlo, Rublev posted consecutive semifinal appearances in Doha, Dubai, and Miami.
Clearly, he is the player to beat in San Diego and Schwartzman faces a Herculean task ahead of him to do so.

Schwartzman Downs Harris
World No. 15 Diego Schwartzman set up the clash with Rublev following a three-set affair against Lloyd Harris in round two. Needing close to two hours, Schwartzman won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 with a 72% first service win rate and converting five out of nine break points.
The 29-year-old Argentinean has had a decent run on the ATP Tour of late although, there is certainly room for improvement.
He reached the fourth round at the US Open, Cincinnati Masters, and Canadian Masters; however, the highlight of his season came in French Open where he was a quarterfinalist. Schwartzman also won the title at his home tournament of the ATP Buenos Aires and is yet to reach a final on the tour since.
Rublev v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip
Rublev will start as the favourite and given his incredible form and consistency, he should reach the semifinal in San Diego. That said, Schwartzman is a worthy adversary and can very well make life difficult for the Russian.
