Irina-Camelia Begu v Fiona Ferro Head to Head
Begu leads the series 1-0, winning their only meeting before this in routine fashion at the 2014 Sao Paulo ITF. The Romanian dropped just one game in that match.

Irina-Camelia Begu will make her return to action for the first time since losing the first round of the US Open to Andrea Petkovic. It is precisely 35 days since the Romanian World No. 61 has played a competitive match, opting to sit out any WTA events post the Flushing Meadows battleground in the month of September.
Begu will arrive at the Indian Wells tennis garden on the back of a strong showing in Cleveland despite that US Open defeat to Petkovic. She reached her first WTA final in four years in Ohio, scoring huge wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Magda Linette.
However, she fell short in the championship match against the in-form Anett Kontaveit, losing in a tight two-setter, 7-6 6-4. That should not dampen her mood as she embarks on another tournament on US soil.
Begu’s form on hard courts this year is a slightly impressive 12-8, which accounts for over half her wins in 2021. Aside from finishing runner-up in Cleveland, she also made the quarterfinals of the Gippsland Trophy, and the Philip Island Trophy in Australia.

Ferro Searches For Momentum
With four wins from her last 10 main draw matches on hard courts, Fiona Ferro’s game hasn’t quite clicked into gear. It is somewhat paradoxical to say this considering how Ferro came agonizingly close to defeat Iga Swiatek in the second round of the US Open.
Aside from her beatdown at the hands of Sara Sorribes Tormo at the Olympics, Ferro’s last five defeats on hard courts in the past few months have been extremely close matches. The aforementioned loss to Swiatek came after she squandered a set and a break lead.
Ferro failed to scale the first round in Ostrava as a qualifier in her previous tournament, losing narrowly to Alison Riske. With consistency being a major problem for the Frenchwoman, her ranking has plummeted considerably in recent months.
At this juncture, she may have done just enough to retain a Top 100 ranking for now, but a lot of work needs to be done at the start of next season.

Ferro’s game relies too much on linear accuracy from the baseline and that tends to yield a generous amount of unforced errors in favor of her opponents. Should her problems mount in this one, Begu has proven in Cleveland she has enough tools in the armor to oppose the big hitters.
