Pegula Eases Past Stephens

World No. 24 Jessica Pegula is off to a great start at Indian Wells. The American knocked out compatriot Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 64.

Serving well throughout the contest, Pegula won 87.5% first serve points and dropped just 9 points on her serve in the entire match. Such was her dominance that she didn’t face a single break point and converted three of the seven breaking opportunities in the match.

It’s been a pretty good season for Pegula, who came into the tournament with a 36-18 season record from all matches. The American, who reached her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open this year, also made a WTA 1000 semifinal debut at the Canadian Open in August.

She was also a semifinalist in Qatar this year, but is yet to reach a final since finishing runner-up at the Auckland Open last year.

This is the first time she has gone past the second round at Indian Wells.

Paolini Shocks Mertens

Italy’s Jasmine Paolini fought back from a set down to upset No. 14 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium on Friday to advance to the third round at Indian Wells.

It was a second three-set win in two days for the World No. 63 who had made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. Paolini had beaten Japan’s Mai Hontama 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the first round.

On Friday, Mertens took the first set with four breaks of serve against two from the Italian, but Paolini came back in the second with three breaks against the Belgian’s two. There were multiple breaks in the decider as well, but it was Paolini who edged ahead with three of them with Mertens getting just two.

The two-hour-and-49-minute contest ended with Paolini winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Paolini had lost her second qualifying round to Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova 1-6, 3-6 on Tuesday. However, the Italian still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. She had won her first qualifying round against Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-1, 6-4 on Monday.

Paolini has been in brilliant form this year and captured her maiden title in Portoroz, Slovenia last month. She also reached two WTA 125K finals this season, winning the title in Bol and finishing runner-up in Saint Malo.

Pegula v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Paolini’s constant rise and current form will be a bit concerning for Pegula, but expect the American to advance after a tough win.
