Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Pavlyuchenkova, Back to her Former Glory
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova reached her career-best singles ranking as World No. 13 in 2011 but couldn’t hold on to it for long. She spent the following seasons in the 20s and 30s, looking to get back up. Fast forward 10 years, the Russian is back at the same place again – this time with a very real chance of going further and cracking into the top 10.
The 30-year-old has had an impressive spell in 2021, as evident from the fact that she started the year at the #38 spot and has moved up some 25 odd places in the ranking.
Even though she hasn’t won a singles title this season (or any since May 2018), her consistency and a few notable performances have helped her a great deal. The rise started in the Madrid Open where she was a semifinalist and later, at the French Open, she stormed into the final before losing to Barbora Krejcikova. A few weeks later, Pavlyuchenkova reached the third round in Wimbledon and later, the fourth round at the US Open.
While her time in Ostrava and Chicago wasn’t great (back to back early-round exits), she did start strong in the Indian Wells Open against Madison Keys. The number nine seed routed the 2017 US Open finalist 6-1, 6-3 on the back of some clinical, masterful tennis.

Fernandez, Looking to Build on Recent Success
19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez may be up against a player who has played significantly more tennis than her, but the young Canadian has already proven that the gap inexperience is not a deciding factor.
In the US Open, she moved past several big guns like Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka en route to the final before succumbing to Emma Raducanu. That trailblazing run propelled her from World No. 73 to World No. 28.
The left-handed teenager also won her maiden WTA title in March this year, beating Viktorija Golubic in the final of the Monterrey Open. However, as seen in several young players on the tour, consistency is yet to become her strong suit. Between that title run in Mexico and the New York stint, Fernandez never made it past the second round in any competition.
Here in the BNP Paribas Open, she started with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alize Cornet although, it was a rusty performance from the 23rd seeded player. That may have done the trick against Cornet but when she takes on Pavlyuchenkova, she will need to up the ante.
Pavlyuchenkova v Fernandez Prediction and Tip
This is going to be an intriguing match to watch. On one side, we have experience while on the other, there’s pure raw talent. All things considered, Pavlyuchenkova looks far more clinical at the moment and may very well hand Fernandez a humbling lesson before moving into the fourth round.
