Jelena Ostapenko v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Putintseva leads Ostapenko 2-1, last defeating her in the 2019 Cincinnati Open in three sets.

Ostapenko Starts Strong

Number 24 seed Jelena Ostapenko started her BNP Paribas Open campaign with a bye into the second round. There, she met Su-Wei Hsieh and defeated her 6-3, 6-0 to reach round three.

With that win, the 24-year-old Latvian has reached this stage in Indian Wells for the third successive time. However, she has never made it past this round in the history of the competition.

For what it’s worth, the current World No. 29 has some momentum on her side to help her break that jinx. In recent weeks, she made it to the third round in the Cincinnati Open and later, was a finalist in the Luxembourg Open (losing to Clara Tauson in the final). Ostapenko’s last stint before coming to the valley was in the WTA Ostrava, where she fell to Maria Sakkari in the second round.

Earlier in the season, the 2017 French Open champion also won the Eastbourne International, moving past the likes of Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, Elena Rybakina, and Anett Kontaveit.

Putintseva Carves Rybakina Upset

Yulia Putintseva had to take the longer route to reach the third round at the Indian Wells Open. In the opener, she beat Andrea Petkovic 7-6(2), 6-1 and later, moved past her 13th seeded compatriot Elena Rybakina with 6-2, 7-6(5).

Currently ranked World No. 43, Putintseva’s recent form has been more than impressive. She is 8-3 in her last three competitions, reaching the semifinal in the Slovenia Open and the final at the Astana Open (ultimately losing to Alison Van Uytvanck in three sets). The Kazakh also won a title earlier in the season at the Budapest Grand Prix, upsetting Anhelina Kalinina in the final.

Like Ostapenko, Putintseva’s best run in the competition entails a third-round appearance in 2016; since then, she has been beaten in the second round, at least up until now.

Ostapenko v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a close match that can very well go either way. Both players are coming off a fine run and will fancy their chances to reach the round of 16.

If I were to pick a winner, I’d have to go with Putintseva – she has been a bit more clinical of late than her Latvian counterpart.
