Pablo Carreno-Busta v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

The pair have played each other six times before, and their current head-to-head record is three wins each.

Carreno-Busta won their two meetings in 2017, but Khachanov won their subsequent encounters in 2019 and 2020. This year, to date, there have been two matches between the pair. The Spaniard won on clay at the Monte Carlo Masters, but it was the Russian who triumphed ion their Olympic semi-finals on the hard courts of Tokyo.

Carreno-Busta Brushes Aside Qualifier

Given a bye in the first round, Carreno-Busta was given a favourable draw against the qualifier, Emilio Gomez from Ecuador, the world number 174.

And the Spaniard was not unduly taxed, taking just over an hour to beat his lowly ranked opponent.

He cruised through the first set, breaking the Ecuadorian in hs opening service game and then again. Gomez briefly threatened to grab a break back but his hopes were quickly snuffed out.

And the die was cast when Gomez was broken again in the opening games of the second set.

There were no more break after that, but Gomez only won three points against the Spaniard’s serve in the whole of the set, and Carreno-Busta, who reached the semi-fianl in Indian Wells in 2018, and the fourth round a year later, had got his latest campaign in California up and running.

Russian Khachanov Not Overly Taxed by Finn

Khachanov, who was also given a bye in the first round, had to work a little harder to reach the third round but, in all honesty, he might have expected Emil Ruusuvouri of Finland, the world number 78, who has been a consistent performer on tour this year, to put up stiffer opposition in their match on Sunday.

The Russian got off to the ideal start, breaking the Finn in the first game, and, although he then had to save a break point, he was always in control of the set, and one more break cemented his position.

Ruusuvouri belatedly showed signs of fight, and it was his turn to break Khachanov early in the second set. Unfortunately for the Finn, hs lead was short-lived and the Russian was soon back on level terms.

And then Ruusuvouri was broken to love. Serving for the match, Khachanov did have to save two break points, but he booked his meeting with Carreno-Busta with his second match point.

Like his opponent on Tuesday, he has a decent record in Indian Wells, having reached the quarter-finals here two years ago.

Carreno-Busta v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

This match between the two Olympic medallists is likely to be tight based on their head-to-head record. Although the Spaniard is the higher ranked player, the surface may favour the Russian, which is why he is tipped to repeat his Tokyo victory.
