Victoria Azarenka v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

Azarenka, Aiming for the Third Title in Indian Wells

The last time Victoria Azarenka reached the quarterfinal at the BNP Paribas Open (2016), she moved on to win the tournament. Following her early exits in her last two appearances here, the Belarusian finds herself in the latter rounds once again with a form and rhythm akin to her title runs.

Starting in the second round with a bye, Azarenka is yet to drop a set in the competition. She started her campaign with a win over Magda Linette and followed it with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Petra Kvitova.

In the fourth round, she ousted her compatriot Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets in just an hour and 31 minutes. The number 27 seed won 69% of her first service points and converted six of the nine break points to reach the quarters.

The 32-year-old, who is the current World No. 32, hasn’t reached a WTA final on the tour since the 2020 Ostrava Open. The closest she came to this season was in the Qatar Open, where she withdrew from her semifinal bout against Garbine Muguruza. In more recent weeks, she reached the third round in Cincinnati, New York, and Chicago.

With a plethora of experience and some fine form, Azarenka looks primed to finally break the deadlock.

Pegula Continues her Fine Run

Jessica Pegula is having herself a tournament to remember in the Indian Wells Open. Starting with a bye into round two as well, she has moved past the likes of Sloane Stephens, Jasmine Paolini and most recently, Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

Her win over the number four seed, the current world number seven, was particularly impressive as she won with 6-1, 6-1 in just an hour. Pegula won an astonishing 85% of her first service points and never gave Svitolina an opportunity to break her serve.

With this kind of menacing form, she will more than fancy her chances of toppling Azarenka.

She has been fairly brilliant this season, having reached her career-best ranking as World No. 24. Pegula has also enjoyed a good run in the US Open swing, reaching the semifinal in the WTA Montreal and third-round in the Cincinnati Open, US Open, Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.

It is worth mentioning that the 27-year-old has also reached the latter rounds in the Australian Open and Qatar Open.

Azarenka v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Azarenka will start this match as the favourite on account of her experience and recent form, but Pegula is playing some wonderful, brilliant tennis. It may not be a straight-set win for either player and if Azarenka wants to win, she will need to substantially up her game.
