Anett Kontaveit v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

In their one and only encounter on the tour, Kontaveit was the winner. The match took place in the 2020 Ostrava Open where the Estonian won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(6).

Alexandrova Benefits from Sakkari’s Retirement

Continuing her dream run in Moscow, Ekaterina Alexandrova moved past Maria Sakkari in the semifinal after taking a 4-1 lead over the Greek. Citing dizziness, Sakkari retired from the match – thus giving the 26-year-old an easy ticket to the final.

This marks the first time since January 2020 that the Russian is featuring in a WTA Tour final. The last time was in the Shenzhen Open where she trumped Elena Rybakina to win her first and only singles trophy on the circuit.

She now finds herself with a good chance to add further to this tally and in all likelihood, she just may do it. Alexandrova’s record in indoor court events is decent by her standards. She was the runner-up in Linz Open in 2018 and has also won the WTA Challenger event in Limoges thrice.

Her overall season, however, has been largely inconsistent barring a few third-round appearances. Her best run came in the Gippsland Trophy where she was a semifinalist, along with reaching the quarters in a few WTA 500 events.

In the Kremlin Cup, the world number 37 has done superbly to build her form and improve the stats. Yet to drop a set, she moved past some big names like Ons Jabeur (6-1, 1-0 retired), Anhelina Kalinina, and Aryna Sabalenka.

Kontaveit, in yet Another Final

Anett Kontaveit is making a habit to feature in WTA finals as she is set to compete in her fifth one of the season.

She has won a couple of them – the Cleveland Open and Ostrava Open – and settled for the runner-up trophy in Eastbourne. She also shared the title in the Grampians Trophy with Ann Li.

The World No. 20 has been on a brilliant run in the second half of the season. In her last four tournaments alone, she is 16-3 and following the week in Moscow, the number nine seed has improved the numbers to 20-3.

Like Alexandrova, Kontaveit is yet to drop a set too and has defeated the likes of Katerina Siniakova, Andrea Petkovic, Garbine Muguruza, and Marketa Vondrousova. The 25-year-old Estonian has achieved all of this with clinical-level efficiency – in the game against Vondrousova, she won 69 percent of her first service points while against Muguruza, the same figure was at 90.

Having arrived for the Kremlin Cup on the back of a quarterfinal run in the BNP Paribas Open, it is fair to say that Kontaveit is on a roll and looks primed to win yet another trophy.

Kontaveit v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

To some extent, Alexandrova has luck on her side while Kontaveit is relying on momentum and semi-flawless, impeccable tennis.

Between the two, Kontaveit is by far the obvious favourite and on paper, she should win the match. But the fact that Alexandrova has beaten three top 10 players in Moscow is a commendable feat. Granted that she got walkovers in two of them but hey, she is in the final and will fancy her chances.

Expect a good game of tennis.
