Karolina Pliskova v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

Pliskova is 8-2 from their past 10 meetings and 2-0 from their two previous WTA Finals matches. Muguruza won their first meeting at the French Open in 2013 and again in Cincinnati in 2017 but has mostly struggled in the matchup between the two aggressive players.

Pliskova Looking to End Her Title Drought

World no. 4 Karolina Pliskova comes into the tournament with a 35-18 season record, which includes three big finals, but unfortunately she remains without a title this year.

A semifinalist at the WTA Finals in three consecutive years in 2017, 2018 and 2019, the Czech will be hoping to at least go one step further this year.

She came very close to capturing her first Grand Slam title, falling agonisingly short in a three-set thriller against Ashleigh Barty at Wimbledon. Pliskova also reached the Italian Open final for the third consecutive year, but was double bagelled by Iga Swiatek in a stunning finale. She reached a third final of the season and a second WTA 1000 final in Montreal, but yet again the totle remained elusive as she went down to Camila Giorgi.

A winner of 16 WTA titles, Pliskova hasn’t won a title since winning in Brisbane in January last year. Can she end the drought by winning her first WTA Finals title?

Muguruza Has Two Titles and Two Runner-up Finishes in 2021

In contrast to Pliskova, Garbine Muguruza has already won two titles this year. The first one came in Dubai in March, when she defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the final and the second title came last month at the Chicago Fall Classic, when the Spaniard rallied from a set down to beat the in-form Ons Jabeur in the title clash.

Muguruza’s recent form hasn’t been great, though, as she lost her only match at Indian Wells and won one and lost one at the Kremlin Cup (her last two tournaments).

She had a sensational start to the season, reaching two more finals in the first quarter, but finished runner-up on both the occasions, going down to Ashleigh Barty at the Yarra Valley Classic and Petra Kvitova in Doha.

Overall, Muguruza has been a consistent performer through the year, and a 38-16 season record is a testament to that.

This is the fourth time that the 28-year-old is participating in the season-ending tournament. She reached the semifinals on debut in 2015, but didn’t go past the group stage in 2016 and 2017. How far can she go this year?

Pliskova v Muguruza Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between two former No. 1s, who have both been very consistent this year. But Pliskova has had the upper hand in the head-to-head rivalry and she will look to extend her dominance over Muguruza with a win on Wednesday. Expect the Czech to start with a victory.
