Shapovalov Begins Title Defence

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov began his defence of the Stockholm title on the right note as he knocked out qualifier Andrea Vavassori in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The left-handed Canadian was given a tough fight by the Italian, who was making his ATP main draw debut in the tournament. Shapovalov, however, upped his level in time to end the Italian’s resistance with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win in an hour and 30 minutes and improve his Stockholm record to 6-1.

Featuring in the tournament for the third time, the 22-year-old captured the crown in the last edition in 2019 by beating Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic in the final. That success still remains Shapovalov’s only career title. He did reach two more finals, but finished runner-up on both the occasions, falling to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters in 2019 and to Casper Ruud in Geneva this year.

Overall, Shapovalov is 28-22 this year, which includes a run to the semifinals of Wimbledon, one of the highlights of his season.

Rinderknech Storms Into Quarters

World No 60 Arthur Rinderknech needed just an hour and 20 minutes to dispatch Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik in the second round on Wednesday.

The Frenchman fired 11 aces, converted four of 10 break points and saved the only one that he faced in the match to win the contest 6-4, 6-1.

Rinderknech was equally good in his first round match, taking a 6-1, 2-0 lead over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, before the Kazakh retired from the contest.

The 26-year-old improved to 18-15 for the season. A semifinalist in Kitzbuhel, he will be playing in a seventh quarterfinal this year.

Shapovalov v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip

Despite Rinderknech’s decent start to the tournament, it will be an uphill task for him to topple the third seed. Expect Shapovalov to take a step closer to his second title.
